I-285 Advanced Improvement Projects

I-285 Advanced Improvement Projects

The I-285 Advanced Improvement Projects will provide local road improvements earlier, mitigate traffic challenges during the construction of the major express lane projects, provide early operational improvements to general-purpose lanes, and maintain healthy competition among our construction developer partners.

RECENT NEWS

As the MMIP has developed and design work has progressed, we’ve evaluated how we are delivering the program. The scope expansion on the I-285 Westside Express Lanes and I-285 Eastside Express Lanes projects (shifting from constructing one lane in each direction to two express lanes in each direction) would provide numerous benefits to the traveling public. The new concept revisits the approach for the I-285 Westside Railroad Crossing Bridge Widenings and the I-285 Westside Bridge Replacements and folds them back into the larger I-285 Westside Express Lanes project. The bridge replacements were originally needed to accommodate the construction and operation of one express lane in each direction – the design needs are now different with the incorporation of two express lanes in each direction. Additionally, the I-285 Westbound Ramp Extension will be absorbed into the proposed I-285 Top End Express Lanes project.

ProjectDescription
I-285/Peachtree Industrial Boulevard Interchange ImprovementsCombines the I-285 Westbound exit ramps to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard north and south, while adjusting the horizontal curve of the north exit ramp to reduce bottleneck from I-285. This project will begin construction in January 2022 and is currently scheduled to reach substantial completion in 2023.
I-285 Eastside Bridge ReplacementsReplaces and extends two overpass bridges to accommodate future I-285 Eastside Express Lanes (Covington Highway over I-285, Redwing Circle over I-285, and Glenwood Road over I-285). This project will begin construction in Q1 2022 and is currently scheduled to reach substantial completion in 2023.
I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane ExtensionAdds an auxiliary lane along I-285 between Roswell Road and Riverside Drive as well as the replacement of the I-285/Mount Vernon Highway bridge

Project Public Participation

Public Detour Open Houses (PDOHs)

A virtual Public Detour Open House (PDOH) was held for the proposed bridge replacement at Redwing Circle over I-285, part of the I-285 Eastside Bridge Replacements project. The comment period for this PDOH closed July 13, 2020. Materials shown on the virtual PDOH page can be found in the Document Library.

Public Information Open Houses (PIOHs)

A series of Public Information Open Houses (PIOHs) for three of the original I-285 Advanced Improvement Projects were held in January 2020:

  • I-285 Westbound Ramp Extension (now part of the I-285 Top End Express Lanes)
  • I-285/Peachtree Industrial Boulevard Interchange Improvements
  • I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane Extension

The purpose of these meetings was to provide opportunities for the public to view current plans, ask questions, and provide feedback. If you would like to view the materials that were shown at the PIOHs materials, please visit the Document Library.
